Organised by UK-RAS and educational publisher Twinkl, the 2020 School Robot Competition saw teams of 3-5 students from schools all over the UK battle it out to design a space explorer robot that could navigate the exciting space terrains and complete a range of tasks. Open to students aged between 8 and 14 years, the teams had to create their space robot designs using the Twinkl app or the web-based version.

The competition attracted a record number of entries, and the judging panel had the difficult task of choosing the finalists from an abundance of fantastic robot designs. Alas, they came to a decision and the winners were team ‘Aspiration’! Well done team ‘Aspiration’ and to all the teams that entered the competition!

Team ‘Aspiration’ are from St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar in Slough in Berkshire, and they were awarded First Place for designing an AR robot that completed multiple challenges on the surface of Mars.

Our entire team has been incredibly impressed by the fantastic designs we received from teams up and down the country, which demonstrated real skill, vision and innovation. Our huge congratulations to the winners, and to every team who submitted entries and engaged so creatively with this activity. We’re very much looking forward to launching another fresh and unique robotics design challenge for schools in 2021.
— Professor Robert Richardson, Chair of the EPSRC UK-RAS Network

The goal of the competition was to help school children to boost their team building, science and coding skills whilst learning about the exciting world of robotics.

Stayed tuned for more competitions and for your chance to win a MiRo robot!
