The winner and finalists that trained MiRo to help people

The GIFT mission: train MiRo to perform a function in the real world that will help people.

During the month of September and October, we received coding programs from budding coders from all over the world! Students submissions came from grade kindergarten up to year 10 and they were based in countries including Indonesia, the United States, China, Sweden, Canada, Syria(!) and many, many more!

We were more than impressed with the response. Firstly, we’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all of the hardworking coders for taking the time to join this global challenge. You should all be very proud of your hard work! It feels our hearts with joy to know that this is just a fore-gleam of the talent and passion from the next generation of programmers. To celebrate their work, we’re going to show you some of the programs that they designed for MiRo by the winner and the finalists.

Here’s a reminder of the task - all entrants had to design a situation or problem and then train MiRo to solve it by writing the code. For example, in a hospital, MiRo could help a patient or a Doctor/Nurse; or in a situation at home, MiRo could help a baby or a pet. Scroll on down to be inspired by the programs that were created! We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Programs from the GIFT Challenge Finalists and the Winner

Medication Reminder

YiXin Hu (China) wanted to train MiRo to remind older people to take their medication.

Human Interactors

Nirbhuy Arun (USA) programmed MiRO to help kids to focus when they were zoned out!

MiRoGuide

Aman Hussain (UK) coded MiRo to help young children who are partially blind so that they could get around and move towards objects such as toys.

Robert

Robert Zicman (UK) programmed MiRo to help blind people that needed guidance to get to the toilet or to other places. MiRo can also help visitors in hospitals or care homes get to the people they are trying to visit or to the toilet.

And finally, the winning program goes to Aarna Narad Dwivedi (UK) for designing:

Companion Guide!

Peak district - MiRo, Sam and his 4 friends were in the peak district for a hike. It gets rainy. The friends slip. MiRo must alert 999 and calm them down in the ambulance.

Guide dog - MiRo is helping his owner Charlie to overcome the daily challenges that he faces.

Our thanks and congratulations go to ALL of the entrants, we encourage you to keep up with your hard work and to never give up! WELL DONE!

Finally, here’s a video of Aarna unboxing her brand new MiRo. We look forward to seeing many more programs from you!

Lastly, we’d like to thank our partners Discovery STEM and Innovation World for working with us to bring the GIFT Challenge to life. Why not head on over to their websites below to learn more about upcoming coding workshops and competitions for budding coders?

In the meantime, stayed tuned for our next coding challenge…..happy coding!
